RCS debuts online classes for summer school and beyond – Murfreesboro Post - For the first time, Rutherford County Schools will begin offering online classes that high school students can take during summer school.

The new program offers online courses to Rutherford County high school students who completed ninth grade and up during the 2012-2013 school year.

“We’re trying to find new ways to serve the needs of high school students to meet graduation requirements,” said Richard Zago, assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “It gives them options other than traditional summer school.”

All courses are developed and taught by Rutherford County teachers.

The following courses will be offered starting June 2013.

English I – A&B*
World Geography – A&B

English II- A&B*
Economics -1/2 credit only

English III- A&B*
Personal Finance -1/2 credit only

English IV – A&B
Government – 1/2 credit only

Bridge Math – A&B
Physical Science – A&B

Geometry – A&B*
EOC Courses – see guidelines for special test dates.

(NOTE: A & B means first and second semester. If a student only needs second semester, he/she may take it starting at the beginning of the summer.)

Fees are $125 per half-credit and must be paid at summer school registration on May 30 at Riverdale High from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Students must come to an orientation at Riverdale High on June 3 or 4. Students can sign up for an orientation session time when paying fees for classes. Fee waivers and refunds are not available. Students can pay with cash, money order or cashier’s check only.

Students may take online courses over the summer at the Riverdale High School lab and/or by working from home. Each semester requires two tests to be taken in the lab.

Online courses also will be offered during the school year

In addition to summer school online classes, the district plans to offer online courses during the school year beginning in August, Zago said.

High school students will be able to take an additional course from home either to make up credits or to graduate early.

For additional information, parents and students should check with the guidance office at their high school. Additional information is also available HERE.
